American-born bishop who attended Franciscan Univ. to head Lithuanian archdiocese

An American-born priest has been named Archbishop of Vilnius in Lithuania. Archbishop-elect Gintaras Lunas Grusas was born in Washington, DC, raised in Los Angeles, studied at the Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, and worked as a computer consultant before he was ordained to the priesthood in Vilnius in 1994. He was ordained as a bishop in 2010, serving as head of Lithuania’s military ordinariate until his appointment to become Archbishop of Vilnius. Archbishop-elect Grusas replaces Cardinal Audrys Backis, who is retiring at the age of 76.
