NEW YORK (AP) — Relatives of a soldier who apparently shot himself in Afghanistan say they're encouraged to learn that eight soldiers from his company have been charged in his October death.
Yen Tao Chen, the father of Pvt. Danny Chen, spoke Wednesday at a news conference in Manhattan's Chinatown.
Chen's father through an interpreter that the family realizes he will never return, but the news "gives us some hope."
The soldiers remain in Afghanistan but have been removed from their duty positions and sent to a different base. They are under increased supervision.
The military says the soldiers face charges ranging from dereliction of duty, assault, negligent homicide and involuntary manslaughter.
The 19-year-old was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
