Today on "Kresta in the Afternoon" - September 10, 2012

Talking about the "things that matter most" on Sept. 10

4:00 – Can 'Government' Ever Be Good? A Catholic Considers the Proper Role of Government
Some on the political "right" espouse a version of libertarianism which is anti-government. This is at odds with the insights summarized in the Catechism. They paraphrase the American founders to imply that the existence of government itself is the problem. Some on the political "left" seem to want to federalize everything. They think that our obligation in solidarity means establishing more federal government programs. They are both wrong. We talk to Deacon Keith Fournier about this question.

4:40 – Fighting the HHS Mandate: Thomas More Law Center on the Offensive
The Thomas More Law Center (TMLC) filed a 22-page Reply to the Government’s opposition of its motion for a Preliminary Injunction to stop implementation of the HHS mandate. The Law Center’s motion was filed on behalf of Legatus, a nonprofit organization of Catholic business leaders and Michigan-based Weingartz Supply Company, and its owner Daniel Weingartz. We with an attorney from the Thomas More Law Center about this case and other cases he is arguing.

5:20 – For Greater Glory on DVD TOMORROW
Many people of faith today are asking, “What is the price of religious liberty?” In the 1920’s many Catholics in Mexico answered this crucial question at the cost of their very lives. The major motion picture, For Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada tells the epic tale of Mexico’s heroic struggle for religious freedom in a little-known conflict called the Cristero War – but many questions still remain. Now you’ll go much deeper into the exciting history behind the movie with this fact-filled companion book – and gain important insight into the on-going fight for religious freedom today. We talk to author Ruben Quezada about the Cristero War and the DVD release of the film tomorrow.

5:40 – Stand Up For Religious Freedom Rally 3: October 20
The first time out we had more than 140 cities and over 65,000 participants, and the second time with over 161 cities. It’s time for the third National Day of Protest Against the HHS Mandates and will be Saturday, Oct. 20. We will again gather in cities across the United States to rally in defense of religious freedom and stand up against the HHS Mandate. The organizers, Eric Scheidler and Monica Miller are here to discuss it.
