Talking about the "things that matter most" on Dec. 12

4:00 – The Divorce Survival Kit For Christmastime
For the divorced, holidays can be hell: splitting the kids up during vacation, loneliness, rejection, anger, depression, and much more. Do you feel that way about the upcoming season? Rose Sweet has been there and has written and produced a powerful series featuring divorced Catholic men and women who share their inspiring stories. Unlike any other program, the program includes the counsel of some of the brightest and best in Catholic media. Too many people stay stuck in their pain and don’t know how to find their way “home”. The program was created to move the divorce or separated Catholic past the pain of divorce so they can find the Love that truly satisfies in the Sacraments. Rose joins us.

4:40 – Kresta Comments: A Global Gay-Rights Crusade
There is some that is commendable and much that is pernicious in Secretary Clinton’s speech last week announcing that the United States will be making “LGBT rights” — that is, the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered persons — “a priority of our foreign policy” and a factor in determining the uses of “foreign assistance.” Among those “human rights,” certainly, is the right of homosexuals to be free from violent attacks and other draconian punishments. As Clinton rightly notes, if there are fundamental rights at all then they “are not conferred by the government,” but ours “because we are human.” But how does this end up dovetailing with a second set of rights that one enjoys by virtue of being homosexual. When Clinton says, “It is a violation of human rights when people are beaten or killed because of their sexual orientation,” no recourse is required to a gay right. The words “because of their sexual orientation” are superfluous. Al has some comments on the global gay rights crusade.

5:00 – Kresta Comments: CBS News Produces an 10-Minute Hit Piece on the Church: Al Responds
On December 4th, CBS’s “The Early Show” aired a 10-minute piece entitled “The Battle: Catholics Vs. Catholics.” It can only be described accurately as a hit piece on the Church, CBS describes it this way: “A 21st century struggle over reforms within Catholicism is playing out beyond the Church. In Phoenix, Ariz., St. Joseph's Hospital can no longer be called a Catholic hospital due to a clash between religion and modern medicine.” Al analyzes the dreadful report.

5:40 – Same-Sex Marriage on the Rocks?
The same-sex “marriage” movement could be at a crossroads after a new civil-union law in Rhode Island failed to generate any interest among the homosexual community. The law granted same-sex couples the same benefits as married couples in Rhode Island without using the word “marriage” to describe their relationship. In the first two months after the law was enacted, only 14 couples sought civil unions — the worst response among any state that has passed a same-sex “marriage” or civil-union law. The tepid response to the law — something the ACLU called an “embarrassing fiasco” — shows that same-sex “marriage” advocates don’t really want the benefits of marriage, said Chris Plante, the Northeast spokesman for the National Organization for Marriage. “It’s about wanting marriage,” he said. Chris joins us to discuss the issue.

  1. Al, I found the CBS Arizona hospital piece you did quite informative. I appreciated you bringing to light the 4 conditions pertaining to a mother's life in jeopardy that the Church teaches. I know time was limited, but perhaps another time you could have on there a doctor who can tell us some of the medical options that could involve "terminating" a "pregnancy" but not the life of the developing infant. Perhaps you know of examples of infants incubated or gestated at a very early stage?

Also, you were correct as to the propaganda of the piece by CBS. Just yesterday, I blogged about an anti-Christian rant by a sports columnist regarding Tim Tebow, but his problem was really with God. I can't help but think incidents also like the Arizona hospital case are rorschach tests for dissident Catholics or anti-Catholics. After all, what came out in the hospital case?–––the issue of women priests! How did that relate to the issue? It didn't, other than it's another issue dissidents have with the Church, so why not use the media platform to propagate that too. You were right that the child's welfare was not the issue. The child was, it seems tragically, used to propagate dissident causes. The whole thing made me think human sacrifice was alive and well, not ending with the Aztecs, but thriving onward in abortion and euthanasia. The sacrifices are made for the advancement of evil.
