Michigan's population continues to drop slightly, U.S. Census Bureau says

(MLive) Michigan continued to lead the nation in population loss since the 2010 U.S. Census, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, though the decline is slight.

The state lost 7,400 residents, or -0.08 percent, between the decennial count on April 1, 2010, and July 1, 2011, the bureau reported today.

"The new estimates generally show slower growth in states that are gaining population, and slower decline in states that are losing population," Michigan state demographer Kenneth Darga said.
Michigan’s rate of population loss slowed in each of the past three years, Darga said, noting the latest numbers show the state "essentially held steady" from 2010 to 2011.

Only two other states are estimated to have lost population during the same 15-month time period, Rhode Island (1,300 or -0.12 percent), and Maine (200 or -0.01 percent).

Today's figures are the bureau's first population estimates since the 2010 Census. Those number were released in March, and showed Michigan was the only state in the nation to lose population, dropping by 54,804 residents to 9,883,640.

The estimates released today show Texas gained the most in population, 529,000, followed by California at 438,000, and Florida at 256,000.

“Our nation is constantly changing and these estimates provide us with our first measure of how much each state has grown or declined in total population since Census Day 2010,” Census Bureau Director Robert Groves said in a release.

The United States' population grew by 2.8 million overall during the 15-month period, to 311.6 million.
“The nation’s overall growth rate is now at its lowest point since before the baby boom,” Groves said.
Here are the 10 states with the largest increase from April 1, 2010, to July 1, 2011.

1. Texas: 529,000
