COLUMBUS, OH, May 3, 2013 (LifeSiteNews) – Columbus Bishop Frederick Campbell has weighed in publicly on the firing of a lesbian teacher from a diocesan high school, telling The Columbus Dispatch that Catholic schools have a “fundamental responsibility” to make sure their teachers uphold the teachings of the faith.
Gym instructor Carla Hale was fired from Bishop Watterson High School last month after an anonymous parent wrote to the Diocese of Columbus to complain that in an obituary for Hale’s mother, Hale was listed as a surviving family member together with her longtime lesbian partner, Julie.
Hale signed a morality clause as part of her contract, affirming that “Catholic school personnel are expected to be examples of moral behavior and professionalism,” and acknowledging her employment could be terminated for “immorality” or “serious unethical conduct.” Because the Roman Catholic Church holds homosexual behavior to be gravely immoral, the Diocese of Columbus found her to be in violation of her contract, and fired her.
In an exclusive interview with The Dispatch, Bishop Campbell said that while diocesan officials “don’t necessarily go looking for things like that,” Hale’s choice to publicly reveal her homosexual relationship left the diocese no choice but to terminate her employment.
Hale wants her job back and has filed a grievance with the teachers union, along with a formal complaint with the Columbus Community Relations Commission accusing the school of violating Columbus’s anti-discrimination ordinance.
City law deems it is a misdemeanor for an employer to discriminate against an employee based on sexual preference, or to have policies which do so. There is no exemption for religious organizations or other employers who object to homosexuality on religious grounds. A guilty verdict carries penalties of up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. The Community Relations Commission will evaluate Hale’s claim and decide whether to pass it on to the city prosecutor’s office.
Bishop Campbell told The Dispatch that the Church, the diocese and the school have been the targets of multiple threats since Hale’s firing. “It can be very intimidating,” Campbell said. “We are very concerned about that, but we have to remain steadfast in the teaching of the church.”
A diocesan spokesman told The Dispatch that the diocese is paying for a Columbus police officer to be present on campus during school hours, and that local police have stepped up their patrols in the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, we will see the same thing happen as always happen. If the union decides not to pursue it, or even the city prosecutor, the gay movement won't let it go. I am sure the ACLU is already forming their case and they will sue and counter sure until the parish and diocese gives up.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad how far we have fallen.
Frankly I do not think somones name appearing in an obituary equal coming out Good God if that we the case His Excellency and half of his in-cardinated & ordained staff might as well resign. Pedophiles and closet Priest far out number lesbian school teachers in the Catholic Education System Just saying...
DeleteIf this is the standard, how many priests must the Bishop fire? What percentage of priests are gay? What percentage of young seminarians are celibate? What percentage actively "date" each other?
Delete@Anonymous to bring up things of which you have no facts and present them as facts is not making a point. Point is she wrote the obituary and she knew what would happen if parents saw it. They did and the church acted. She knew all along that the catholic church taught against it. She was married when hired she broke the contract she was fired not because she likes women. But because she presented herself as living with someone. If it had been a woman that was living with a man I'm sure when a parent complained they would have taken the same actions. Or if the teacher was into witchcraft and wrote an article that a parent found she would have been fired. Facts are facts and even if you don't agree with the church's teaching one has nothing to do with the other She broke her contract.
Delete"an anonymous parent wrote to the Diocese of Columbus to complain that in an obituary for Hale’s mother, Hale was listed as a surviving family member together with her longtime lesbian partner"
DeleteYes, I agree with the poster that this hardly constitutes "coming out." The poor lade was outed, rather than came out. The parent is malicious. The Bishop should have recognized this and ignored it. I sometimes am dismayed at the both the authoritarianism and the viciousness of the Catholic hierarchy. This action on the part of Bishop Campbell is both. It's unnecessary cruelty on his part and therefore sickening. Poor lady.
a parent at the school has every right to call the diocese when they find the gym teacher is living in sin. She is not a poor lady outed She knew full well what she was doing and that was going against her contract she even talked it over with her partner and her partner said are you sure you want to do this. They knew but they also knew that with all the demanding gays in the world they would have a free fight and free money to support that decision. Poor lady no way she is in heaven being in the news as the poor teacher. Nope the church wouldn't have went looking for this she put it out there and dared the Church to act on it. Would you be writing about the poor lady if she posted in her mom's obituary that there would be a witches circle preformed around the body at midnight and a anonymous parent told on her? if not then hush up about this as it has nothing to do with cruelty or being sick just how the rules are when you sign a contract.
DeletePeter David, it looks like you mis-read the article. Hale's mother passed away, and in the obituary, Hale gave information that she and her lesbian partner were "surviving kin." She was not outed by someone else--this was a public paper, so the information in the obituary constitutes public knowledge. Granted, the school may not have found that information without the anonymous parent bringing it up, but the fact that it was public information in the first place means that the teacher clearly broke what I presume was a standard "morals code" in her contract (I don't have any specific info on her contract, so I'm simply speculating on that aspect of the story.) The bishop is backing the school, whose board, I presume, decided to fire the teacher for breach of contract.
DeleteBr. Kevn Gregorek,
DeleteOk, fine, you are correct. Yet the lady was morning the death of her partner of many years. The implication of the story is that gay couples are to have no kind of public recognition even in the case of extreme loss. I find the Bishop's actions indecent and unnecessarily cruel. His heart is made of stone. What a fine example of using the law to crush the spirit. Poor lady. I hope she will find other work. I hope at least some Catholics will extend ordinary sympathy to her on the loss of her partner. Poor lady.
Some people, such as Peter David, seem to have trouble getting their facts straight. The teacher lost her mother, not her "partner." Incidentally, I have a particular dislike for people who sign legal documents when advantageous (e.g., getting a job) and then don't want to live by the document's provisions afterward. When her situation changed, she should have resigned. Kudos to the bishop for standing by church principles. More and more of us who try to live according to Scripture will be in that position as the persecution of Christians intensifies.
DeleteThanks for setting that straight my computer went dead and I'm screaming get your facts straight before you defend something. I also would like to add if it was her lover that died she most likely wouldn't have lost her job as she then wouldn't have been living with a women.
DeletePlease accept my apology for mistaking the facts. Her mother died, not her partner. Not sure why I thought that, but I regret the error.
DeletePeter David apology accepted. If you rely on news you only get half of the picture. She herself was interviewed and said she told her partner and her partner said are you sure you want to do this? She wrote the obituary that was in the Columbus Dispatch She knew her students and their parents would read it. Not to say gay people should be in a closet but if you know it will cost you your job. Also those that think the church should allow gay teachers has nothing to do with what she agreed to when she was hired. As the Bishop stated they don't go looking for this but it came to him and he had to react. To me this is a clear cut case It has nothing to do with should the church believe the way they do. It has to do with what the hiring agreement was.
DeleteThe woman signed the contract to teach at the Catholic school - she read the contract, knew what it said and should have known that she would be fired when it was known in public. She broke her contract with the Catholic Church as a school educator - thus I agree she should be fired.
DeleteI am not a Catholic but I agree that she should not be teaching children in a parochial school. It goes against God's design of the family. One man and one woman.
ReplyDeleteThis argument has certainly lost in the court of public opinion, the court that really matters in a democracy. God has no design for the family. How absurd.
DeleteWhat do you base your comment that God has no design for the family. I'm sure it wasn't because he made Adam and Eve and they were to go out and be fruitful That sounds like a design for the family to me. I am Catholic and pubic opinion doesn't count what counts is what is right. I would say Jesus wasn't to popular with the pubic opinion as they yelled CRUCIFY HIM CRUCIFY HIM and they demanded the release of a thief. So the pubic opinion doesn't count to a Christian what counts is what God said.
DeleteReligious freedom is under attack...all the time! This woman has a right to choose HER lifestyle and her partners with her preference...doesn't she?! Well, the same is true for an organization. They have a right to instill policies based on their beliefs and objectives...she signed the contact with the morals clause and now when she has to live up to it is throwing herself a big old pity party....sick of this....so sick of this!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sick of it too What does the pubic opinion have to do with a private school and their hiring and firing practices. Its cut and dry in my book she was married got a divorce that is okay but living with someone isn't and she chose to put it in the obituary knowing what would happen but wanting to do this to hurt the Catholic Church. Hummmmmm sounds like the devil at work to me and all those that are fighting for her are fighting against the churches teachings. Thanks to all that are standing for Religious Freedom.
DeletePerhaps the Bishop should spend less time imagining what kind of sex this lady was having and care for the poor and the sick! He's sex obsessed, clearly. Bishops! Stay out of the bedrooms of Catholics! Get back to your proper business! What tyrants you have become!
DeleteHe is a busy Bishop last Sunday 2 confirmation masses and a bishops appeal dinner to attend None of which did he talk about sex. The only clear thing is he did what was necessary once it was brought to his attention. How is he in anyones bedroom? He is following the teachings of the church cut and dry written in ink. He doesn't want to imagine what is going on in a gay relationship he just want to keep it away from the students who parents want it that way and pay for them to be in a school that has it that way.
DeleteIt's about time the anti-religious woke up! If the gay activists can demand a Catholic or other religious church hold a immoral marriage--I mean it's right in the Christian Bible!--than why can't this be done. Evil hypocrites!
ReplyDeleteWhat an injustice! And a foolish move as well. The first amendment may protect Bishop Campbell, but I do hope he is prosecuted. And I hope this is a public opinion disaster (meaning that he can't win even if he does win). The Catholic Church has become more and more crazed as the gay civil rights has advanced.
ReplyDeleteThe Catholic Church has not changed in years and I don't see why they should. People demanding they accept wrong teachings is what is wrong here. That is the injustice against Christians. This has nothing to do with allowing the freedom for those that want to practice any type of evil to do so but not in their schools. Prayers are with the Bishop to hold strong against the evil trying to get their hold on more and more people. She didn't uphold her contract she is free to go work at another place that doesn't have that in their contract. Shame on her and all that are supporting her.
DeleteActually, most American Catholics are not supportive of the Vatican policies on sexualtiy. Look it up. Poll after poll shows that mass attending Catholics are against the Church teachings on sexuality. You belong to a distinct minority.
DeleteActually I don't have to look nothing up as I go to church and I know what my friends think. the teaching they are talking about may be the teaching of birth control Also if they don't like that teachings of the church they are free to find another church. I see those that come take communion and leave out the side door. Those that come on holidays only etc So mass attending Catholics please. I'm sure all churches have those that belong to their church and attend here and there and can't wait to leave. But the Church shouldn't change for the lukewarm catholics or others. I hate it when those that aren't real CAtholics want to post as if they know something about a real catholic.
DeleteWho's poll and what was the question on that poll? I believe this is true as far as the Church's teaching on Birth Control. Not on the teachings of being Gay. To actually be gay is not a sin the sin comes when they act on this in a sexual way. I would also like to point out that if a person was into bestiality the church would say it is a sin and I bet most American Catholics are not supportive of that. So if you are trying to make a point and using your so called facts at least get them right.
DeleteI'll ANSWER YOU SPECIFICALLY. READ IT AND WEEP!
DeleteFrom the Huffington Post, April 8, 2013
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/08/catholics-gay-marriage-support_n_2835847.html
US Catholics support gay marriage by a larger margin than ordinary Americans despite Church teachings that forbid it, a new poll out Friday has found.
From the Huffington Post:
"The Quinnipiac University poll found 54 percent of Catholics support same-sex marriage while just 38 percent are opposed, compared to a 47-43 percent margin among all American voters.
Both margins represent a reversal from the 36-55 percent opposition among all voters the group found as recently as July 2008.
"Catholic voters are leading American voters toward support for same-sex marriage," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the polling institute."
Even the VP thinks he is catholic so your poll proves nothing. I read polls that said Romney would win the election too but it didn't happen. This article has nothing to do with anything you just said so you read it and weep.
DeleteSeriously...the Huffington Post...pleeeease. Who did the poll Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden. I am weary of faux Catholics skewing polls. If you want to know what a Catholic thinks then ask a practicing Catholic not a C & E Catholic. Sheesh.
DeleteThe poll was conducted by Quinnipiac University, not Huffington Post. Anonymous is right that the result has been consistently born out by other polls. The question is what does it mean for the Church that so many adherents reject or disregard its teaching on sexuality, marriage, and the family.
DeleteThe only thing interesting about the poll is the language gymnastics. Saying that you are a porcupine doesn't make it so. Hard to understand how a poll responder or a huffpost reader can see a correlation between not agreeing with Catholic teaching and being Catholic. I supose its a case of see what you want to see or, in the case read into what you want to read into.
DeleteThe Holy Roman Catholic Church is not a democracy. It has a definitive leader Jesus the Christ. His church is continued to this day and the Pontiff has His authority as passed down through the apostle Peter. It doesn't matter how many people have turned away from the teachings of Christ, these teaching will never change. They are Gods' law.
DeletePeople who talk about "polls" in the same breath with "Church teaching" understand nothing about the Christian faith. We believe that Jesus is God incarnate as a man. God is Truth. God/Truth doesn't change. Your arguments are like saying, "We took a poll and found that 90% of people think that the law of gravity is unjust and a stupid law, and that humans have the right to fly." So then you go and jump off a 30-story building, flapping your arms like a bird. All the polls and opinions and arguments about your "rights" won't do one darn thing to prevent you from splattering into pieces on the ground. Reality doesn't give a flip about your opinions one way or the other. Reality just IS.
DeleteThe Church has passed down what Jesus taught His disciples; those disciples taught THEIR disciples; etc., etc., down to the present day. This is called the Magisterium, or teaching authority of the Church. Jesus breathed upon His disciples and called down the Holy Spirit on them. They have had His teaching authority ever since. They don't have His perfect freedom from sin in their personal lives -- because they are human, just as we are. But they do have teaching authority. We Catholics hear the voice of the Church as the voice of the Lord Jesus -- who is GOD, beyond which or above which there is nothing, since He contains all that is beyond and above!
God bless you, I agree. The Catholic Church is not a democracy. God made the laws, we can choose to follow or not. If you don't agree you are free to leave. But don't then try to change the rules to suit your whim. Start your own church or school that follows your ideas. The parents that choose to send their kids to Catholic schools pay tuition, sometimes pretty steep amounts, in addition to paying school taxes to support public schools in their area. They have chosen this extra burden based on what they think is best for their children. We still have this freedom in America!!!
DeletePolls are useful. They tell us where public opinion stands on an issue, and they can tell us where Catholic opinion is too. Polls are not a replacement for Church teaching, but as long as we care about public opinion--which we do, otherwise why have Catholic radio, etc--we need to know what the public is thinking. There's no reason to feel threatened by polling data.
DeleteTo add an afterthought/revision to what I just wrote: it is true that polling data becomes part of the conversation. It may demoralize some folks or cause them to feel that uncomfortable that they hold opinions no longer in the mainstream. The "majority" is very powerful in this country.
DeleteAfter all this talk about polls, I searched for a recent one on Catholic views, and found the NY Times poll of March 5, 2013.
Deletehttp://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/03/05/us/catholics-poll-graphic.html
Perhaps Al could devote a program to this whole subject of polls, etc? (I listen regularly and happily -- sorry if I missed it and you've already done this.)
The teacher flagrantly violated her contract. There are legal penalties for violating contracts. Law, in the adult world, is not decided by opinions or wishes no matter how many may hold them, only when laws are passed. The law which was passed to say that sexual preference cannot be used in employment decisions should rightfully have granted exceptions for religious institution's employment. This kind of case went to the Supreme Court and the Church won. There are many precedent cases.
DeleteI'm more intrigued by the fact that she signed the agreement and then did not hold to it. That is what gives me pause in her continuing as a teacher. If a teacher can publicly break the code she signed; what do you tell a student who has signed, and then violated, the honor code? I hope that Bishop Campbell is willing to go to jail rather than compromise the standards and teaching of the church and the integrity of honoring an agreement.
ReplyDeleteShe obviously did not think she was living immorally. Are you prepared to say that all gay couples live immorally? Really? This is not, as I said above, the view of the vast majority of mass attending Catholics in this country. Don't take my word for it. Read the polls. Mass attending Catholics in this country do not, my a vast majority, agree that two persons of the same sex, living in monogamy, are living immorally.
DeleteI fail to see the relevance, since the Church is not a democracy.
DeleteIt would be better for them if they would stop lying about being Catholic and joined a different church.
She signed the contract when she was married to a man so she changed her mind on what she was and it is what it is. Once she changed her mind she should have looked for another position and not continued to go against the church. That is the Churches teaching no matter how many don't agree with it. I would say if you don't agree there are tons of churches that teach differently. I know many who were baptized catholic and they refer to themselves as catholic but I bet those in your poll aren't on a parish membership files.
DeleteI just read all of the comments above here. I've never seen so many assumptions of intent or motive written so brazenly, without evidence. "She put it out there to challenge the church to fire her?" "The bishop is sex obsessed?" "God has no design for the family?" (Where were you when he created the heavens and the earth? How can you know his designs without claiming for yourself omiscience?) "She is in heaven as the poor teacher?"
ReplyDeleteWe can not know the state of someone's heart and mind. How does anyone here presume to know the motives and emotional reactions of another? For what it's worth, I've seen people removed from ministry for even non-sinful violations of signed contracts. You should live up to your agreements. I side with the Bishop and school board. And Br. Kevin, this is your soon-to-be brother from Arizona. Everyone else, stop trusting in you telepathic powers.
Of course you side with the Bishop. But the Catholic majority doesn't. The divide between mass attending Catholics and the hierarchy continues to grow. It's not a sustainable situation.
DeleteSo you think God, the Almighty, the Infinite, Creator of the Universe, should consult with YOU and go about reversing Himself on anything that doesn't suit your precious little opinions? Wow. Wish you could hear yourself.
DeleteWhat do we mean by "the Church"? Is the Church the faithful or is it the hierarchy? Many Catholics favor a more inclusive and liberal Church open to contraception and gay couples (those in relationships) and less strict on divorce (a painful subject to be sure) and of course many Catholics favor allowing priests to marry. What is or ought to be the relationship between Catholics and their leaders?
DeleteThe "Catholic majority" doesn't have anything to do with it. The Catholic Church is not a democracy. It is the church founded by Jesus and is the same today as it was when he founded it. The woman has same-sex attraction -no sin in that. But she is acting on her homosexual tendencies, and that is the sin. Nothing new there. Now we have the state interfering with church. Despite what some "Catholic majority" may think, the Bishop is right, and has my full support.
ReplyDeletePrayers for our Bishop Stand Firm
DeleteSo it's a sin for her to act on her attraction but not a sin for you to act on your attraction? Can't you see how unfair that is? We are talking about two consenting adults, in a very "traditional" relationship, not something weird, just two people of the same sex who love each other, exactly as heterosexuals. It's just not that difficult for me to understand and it's basic decency to accept these people into the Church. We have bigger things to think about. Let the gays in and welcome them and stop all this nonsense about them living immorally.
DeleteThe catholic church is not telling you to believe what they teach so if you want a church that welcomes gays and blesses their unions you are welcome to attend that church. But don't try to change the Catholic church as we didn't ask you for your advise on our beliefs. If we didn't like the teaching we would start a church of our own as well!
Delete"Our beliefs"? You think the only Catholics in America are Vatican Catholics? Please, you are in the minority in the Church, not me. Read the polls! Know you Church!
DeleteI am not a Catholic, rather a Charismatic Pentecostal Protestant. But I firmly stand with the Bishop in this matter. His is a Biblical stance. The woman signed a contract and then decided not to honor it --- as a so-called Catholic believer herself. I find it difficult to comprehend those who argue that the Bishop is wrong. It is the Church that has been "wronged" not this woman. I wonder how she will answer to Jesus when asked about her own behavior.
ReplyDeleteThe US Constitution gives religious institutions protection as the Founding Fathers wrote for separation of Church and State. The State has no right to meddle with religious instituitions. It goes against what we stand for as a country.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, the employee signed a contract when she joined the school. She is the one who chose to act out on her same sex attraction. She needs to find an alternative type of work.
The Catholic Church has already experienced too many attacks from the inside from homosexual priests. It is not appropriate to put anyone with a known perversion in front of children, especially considering what has already happened in the past.
Do not attack the Catholic church for trying to keep our morales. The employee was in violation of her contract by "living openly with her homosexual lover. I would not like this woman or any other openly "gay" (Yea, right) teacher teaching any child of mine. And men who are priest and commit crimes against children should be "fired" and jailed. Too bad she can't go to jail for violation of 56% of the American Citizens who still uphole personal values and standards of conduct. I hate the sin, but not the sinner! I will pray for her, but I will pray more for the Bishop attempting to protect his people and mailtain standards of decentcy
DeleteYou admit you want to send gay people to jail on morals charges: "Too bad she can't go to jail for violation of 56% of the American Citizens who still uphole personal values and standards of conduct." Fortunately, the Supreme Court has said that gay people are entitled to "respect" in their private lives (Lawrence v. Texas).
DeleteWasn't this exactly the dispute between Justice Kennedy and Justice Scalia? Scalia thinks it's constitutional for states to criminalize private sexual conduct and Kennedy said it violates the right to privacy?
DeleteThe real issue is whether gay marriage will become normal in this country. Polls, (if I may say that word!) suggest that young people (including Catholics) have no problem with gay marriage. George Will has said that opposition to gay marriage is literally dying off.
The thing is The lying about it was probably the bigger reason to fire her. Remember Clinton. He was impeached for the lie not the act?
ReplyDeleteAfter the unanimous Hosanna-Tabor Lutheran Church and School vs. EEOC decision, how does Ms. Hale have any sort of case at all? All the school has to do is claim "ministerial exception" and that is the end of it. Even Justices Breyer, Ginsburg, Sotomayor, and Kagan say she has no recourse.
ReplyDeleteIf she isn't a lesbian then why did she react this way instead of just saying the charges are not true? If she is a lesbian then she is outside the Churches official teaching and should be fired. If you are a practicing homosexual then you are outside the bounds of the Catholic Church and the Bible. If you don't like it then just leave. The doctrine is not going to change nor can it.
ReplyDeleteAre you married Joshua? Do you use birth control? If so, just leave!
DeleteI was fired when a female student complained that I grabbed her by the wrist even though that never happened nor was proven, Where was the teachers union and the ACLU then? I have not been able to get another teaching job in five years.
ReplyDelete
