If you've felt something strange in the air, it may be down to the changing direction of the wind emanating from Newt Gingrich. He's surprised just about everyone on Twitter by hitting reverse on his anti-gay marriage stance and urging the Republican Party to "accommodate and deal with reality." While maintaining his view that church-sanctioned marriage should apply only to heterosexuals, he said the GOP needed to make a distinction between a church marriage and a legal document issued by the state. "The reality is that in a number of states ... gay relationships will be legal — period," he said. [Source]

  1. The problem with his position is that once the state says that gay marriage is a right then the state could compel the Church to perform gay marriages on the basis that it is a right, fairness and discrimination. He is neither recognizing or respecting the natural law and the Church's position on traditional marriage. I would normally say that first he needs to be privately talked to by his priest about his dissent from Church teaching but since he went public with his position which is contrary to Church teaching I believe he needs to be publicly rebuked.
