Talking about the "things that matter most" on Nov. 12

4:00 – FBI Investigation Led to Petraeus Resignation
The resignation of David H. Petraeus as CIA director followed an FBI investigation of many months, raising the question of why he was not forced out until after the election. In his letter of resignation, Petraeus cited an extra-marital affair he had been having. “After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair,” Petraeus said in his letter to President Obama. “Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.” We talk to the journalist who broke this story – Ronald Kessler.
4:20 – Lessons Learned by Catholics and Republicans One Week Later
It’s been nearly a week since the election and both Catholics and Republicans have been thinking hard about the lessons to take away. We talk to Deal Hudson about the advice he would give to the party when is comes to social conservatives, Latinos, single women, and wining candidate as well as what he would tell the Bishops, priests and Catholic laity.

5:40 – A Year of Faith and Evangelization
“Until we have encountered Jesus at a deep and personal level, at a heart level, our engagement in the life of his bride, the Church, will remain quite limited. … Jesus calls us his friends. Friendship is built on communicating with one another. Prayer is communicating and so we need to pray….We also need to pray because the task ahead is daunting. In begging God’s help, we acknowledge that what we cannot do ourselves can be accomplished by the grace of God.” So begins the Pastoral Letter from Lansing Bishop Earl Boyea declaring a year of prayer in the diocese. Bishop Boyea joins us.
Mr. Kresta, I am concerned about Bishop Boyea's comments that the laity must be at the forefront of the "new evangelization" and that priests and bishops are mere "cheerleaders" who should encourage and support. This comment is disturbing in light of the recent election. The majority of Catholics, including those who lead ACTS retreats and publish Catholic publications such as Today's Catholic, which put Julian Castro on its front page, are poorly catechized. The last thing we need is the clergy cheering on misinformed and ignorant Catholics. Once again, I fear our clergy are disengaging from the culture and ignoring their responsibility to lead the flock to heaven not hell. In my opinion, the clergy have been lax in speaking the "truth" and catechising from the pulpit. The clergy should be bold and focus on the fundamental truths from the pulpit and in church bulletins. It's no time to abdicate their responsibility to educate and lead.
