4:40 – Kresta Comments
In Coming Apart, Charles Murray explores the formation of American classes that are different in kind from anything we have ever known, focusing on whites as a way of driving home the fact that the trends he describes do not break along lines of race or ethnicity. Drawing on five decades of statistics and research, Coming Apart demonstrates that a new upper class and a new lower class have diverged so far in core behaviors and values that they barely recognize their underlying American kinship—divergence that has nothing to do with income inequality and that has grown during good economic times and bad. 5:00 – Defending the Free Market: The Moral Case for a Free Economy
In his thought–provoking new book, The Moral Case for a Free Economy. Fr. Robert Sirico argues that a free economy promotes charity, selflessness, and kindness. He shows why free-market capitalism is not only the best way to ensure individual success and national prosperity but is also the surest route to a moral and socially–just society. Father Sirico himself converted from being a leftist colleague of Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden to recognizing the merits of a free economy. Capitalism does not simply provide opportunity for material success, but it ensures a more ethical and moral society as well. Fr. Sirico joins us.
To be fair, I have not read Father Robert Sirico Free Market book yet but I sensed a vague definition of what Fr Sirico understands the Free Market to be. We certainly do not have it in the global economy and the free trade world. What is called the Free Market is a economic stew of many different "isms" in a wild settings where anything goes. I say this having grown in a family business and having several business ventures of my own. I really never found the Free Market.
ReplyDeleteI have been online since 1998, as an advocate for workers dignity, fair trade, the real free enterprise system and local value added economies.
The so called Free Market we have now is based primarily on making money on money instead of making things. This economy is burning out and I do not know what will replace it. Fair trade laws have been on the books for years but I never saw it defended in a court of law. The small business man, has no way to seek a judgement for fair trade. The Free Market today is anything but free and all have grab on the lifeboat, President Obama threw out in the bail outs of big money and Wall Street. He put them back in charge of a failed systems with workers having no voice in the process. At http://therationale.com/ I explore the latent response of religion and philosophy to the global economic arena.
