Urban Meyer offends then apologizes to campus LGBT group

(Jay LaPrete/AP)
(Yahoo! SportsUrban Meyer is having a tough time making friends in his new role as Ohio State's coach.
First he upset several other Big Ten coaches with his recruiting tactics and now Meyer has upset the Ohio State LGBT group, "Scarlet and Gay" with his coaching tactics.
On Feb. 29, Scarlet and Gay sent Meyer a letter expressing disappointment over his decision to use lavender jerseys as a punishment for players who were "loafing" during offseason conditioning drills.
"Lavender is associated as a feminine color, so it deals with masculinity," Scarlet and Gay president Tim Valentine told Ohio State student newspaper The Lantern. "It would appear, if (lavender) was the color (of the mesh shirts), that the coaching team is trying to say, 'If you are loafing, if you are not performing up to par then you are performing in a feminine way, and so we are going to label you with a color that makes you non-masculine.'"
A day after Meyer received the letter, he wrote back apologizing for offending the group and said he would change the color of the jerseys.
"Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding the purple mesh pullovers," Meyer said in his letter. "The use of purple was never intended to be used to offend anyone, but since it has, we have taken steps to change the color.
"Please accept our sincere apologies. We have core values of respect and honor within our program, and these are two principles that are central to my personal life, my coaching and to Ohio State and its athletics programs. Bias has absolutely no role in how we think or operate."
While I applaud Meyer addressing the student concerns and correcting the problem, I feel like Meyer is continually being held to a higher standard than others in the Big Ten. After all, the conference is home to the infamous Iowa pink visiting locker room.
Legendary coach Hayden Fry had the locker room painted pink back in 1978 and in 2005, the university decided to turn everything else in the room — the floors, lockers, urinals — pink as well. The room drew the ire of a campus lesbian organization, but Iowa was unfazed and the room is still unchanged.
Since Meyer hasn't had a chance to win games to appease the Ohio State faithful, little gestures of good faith like this show that he's more than just the football coach, that he cares about the Ohio State community. Or at least he cares enough not to go to war with any of campus groups so early in his tenure.

  1. What a bunch of garbage. As an OSU alumni and alumni member of the marching band, he should have responded the way Iowa did, UNFAZED! Now they own a color? What next? We just keep giving ground. It's dumb. Just ignore it. The OSU football coach has plenty of power and cache, even without winning any games yet, he doesn't need to even be addressing this but it's too late. He's Catholic too....I only hope a real one.

  3. Does what offend whom? My comment offends you or the response offends you? I'm offended at the fact that we have defined, and given special right to people who live in mortal sin and profess it. If someone has truly studied the creation account, adam and eve and the fall in depth, homosexuality on display and the creation of laws that 'make it okay' just like laws that 'make abortion okay' indeed offend me. The coach used lavender. As a former football player, I would NOT want to wear lavender and would work really hard to remove that. This in no way was meant to target any lesbian group. Also, this strikes at the heart of mixing male and female and people seeing no difference in the two. If there were no difference, then why did God realize that something more was needed. The final culimnation of creation was Eve. Why? So that God's creation could continue in procreation, the work of the trinity itself, something even the angels cannot do. These groups and many who aren't gay but sympathize and support this behavior as private really have no idea what they are saying or doing. It does effect others and years ago when gays said their actions didn't affect society, well, look at where we are now, legistlatures passing laws that say a man can marry a man and a women can marry a women. My wife and I were licensed to foster and approved for adoption recently in the state of Ohio. These so called couples get preference over my home, with a mother, father and 4 boys when the evidence shows that gay folks live shorter lives and have and even higher rate of seperation from their partners then heterosexual couples. You bet this entire think with coach Meyer offends me. It shows how much control these folks really do have. What is irronic is the Iowa was UNFAZED, yet this is the state where the supreme court said so called same sex marriage was okay. Those justices have since been tossed, I do believe. These groups should not be given a voice or any power to control anything, yet the age of feelings has decended. What is true is true, even if no one believes it and what is false is false, even if everyone believes it. I love the homosexual but the homosexual act is an offense to God and natural law. I too have my sins, and they are an offense to God, but I don't go around falunting them or making exuses or say they are okay, I try to beat them back, to pray, to mortify, to learn and to eliminate because I love God and want to be righteous in His mind, not mine.

  4. I should have been clearer. I meant to ask if you were offended by the situation at OSU and its outcome. I have been married for over 36 years and have observed a lot of prejudice and violence resulting from that prejudice. You make a lot of emotional claims in your statement. It is the heterosexual male who has created the failures in marriage and society. It is the heterosexual male who has created a violent and dangerous world which threatens women to bring their unborn children into this life. Being offended by the coach Meyer situation is a distraction from what we men really need to address in this life. We must build a world which makes it safe for children to be born and to thrive. The Beatitudes are the guidlines.

  5. 1. I have one wife, I've been married one time, I have four boys, no kids by any other women, I'm on the board of my county right to life chapter, I use my marketing skills to design billboards and other campaign across the country for life, my wife and I are approved by the state of Ohio to adopt and also licensed by the state of Ohio to foster, we have kids in and out of our home that come from all walks of life, I donate money heavily to pro-life funds and am contemplating writing a check to adopt a fifth child. Oh, I'm a heterosexual male, who's also working on a masters degree in theology. I think I'm doing a FINE job of building a world which makes it safe for children. I also think I have enough brains in my head to deal with multiple issues. I also have not personally created any violence or danger in the world which threatens women and publically and privately give women many options in which to choose life, as evidence by my above statements. Your comments are baseless and off topic. I think it is completely reasonable to comment on this situation, all the while, doing exactly what I am doing, which is creating a completely safe world for women to bring children into the world and thrive. I've put my money, time and attention where my mouth is and challenge anyone to show me a story that is any more pro-life! The HOMOSEXUAL lifestyle is breaking apart the family, ruining lives and is threatening children more and more. If you can't see that, we have nothing left to discuss. End part 1

  6. You bet I'm emotional because I'm tired of people rolling over to such a politically charged issues such as homosexual activities. This group, Scarlet and Gay promotes all sorts of sordid activities, and all outside of marriage. How does THAT protect children. The very nature of their act says NO to children and yes to pleasuring myself. The marital act is meant to me in a marriage and to procreate, not outside of marriage in a situation in which no procreation is possible. Best to read Genesis chapters 1-3 with a fine tooth comb and then read theology of the body and you will see how the parts fit and how homosexual parts don't fit together in God's creation.
