An American Jewish researcher has uncovered evidence that Pope Pius XII went under cover on personal missions to save Jews from the Holocaust.
Gary Krupp of the Pave the Way Foundation cites a letter from a Jewish man who escaped from the ghetto in Rome and was taken into the Vatican for safety. Much later, upon meeting Pope Pius XII, the man recognized the Pontiff as the man who had—dressed as a simple Franciscan friar—escorted him into the Vatican.
Krupp, who founded the Pave the Way Foundation in 2002 to promote understanding between Catholics and Jews, has become thoroughly convinced through his research that Pius XII did his best to resist the Nazi regime and especially to save Jews. He notes that the Pope frequently drove through Rome to observe war damage—a habit that makes it plausible that he would have personally brought Jews out of the city’s ghetto.
