Join Fr. Robert Barron on a journey across the planet and deep into the faith. CATHOLICISM is a breakthrough documentary series presenting the true story of Christianity and the Catholic faith.
Hi Al, I am a regular listener and I have been coming close to the Church & faith for a very long time now, thanks in no small part to your daily afternoon show. This last Wednesday or Thursday you said something that left me very perplexed “Christianity is not a religion but a reflection of reality”. I thought long and hard about this, and here's why I'm still confused: if it's but a reflection of reality as you say, then its most important propositions should be knowable, or discoverable, even today by using today's methods and processes of knowing. P. ex. if you don't know or if you forgot water's boiling point, you get a thermometer and you measure it up. Or if you want to know how people react with each other, you go among them, take notes and pretty soon you will find out. Now how would it be possible to do such thing today for Christianity's basic propositions: can you find out anything about the Fall of Man? Can you discover today that Christ was born of a virgin? Can you come up, with today's methods, with the doctrine of original sin? Of atonement? And so on. I would appreciate if you could help me on this, as I have been traditionally taught that Christianity is a religion and, as such, its main tenets should be taken on faith.
Dear Confused in MI: The 2 books you must have if you are interested in the Catholic Faith is a Catholic "Bible" and the "Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition" (dark green cover).
This CCC contains the Doctrine of the Church; everything on Faith and Morals that Catholics are required to believe. It contains footnotes pertainent to Sacred Scripture as well as other Church documents.
