On any other day at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, CA Daniel Galli and his four friends would not even be noticed for wearing T-shirts with the American flag. But Cinco de Mayo is not any typical day especially on a campus with a large Mexican American student population. The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts "incendiary" and threatened to suspend them if they did not turn them inside out.

I am so proud of these boys for expressing their Patriotism and for their parents who support them. I don't understand how Cinco de Mayo became so popular? It's not even a celebrated holiday in Mexico and is certainly NOT an American holiday - so what's the hubub? Also, as an American of Mexican heritage, I think it's disgusting that this school, this principal are teaching hispanics to have a sense of entitlement instead of encouraging them to adopt the American Patriotism they should be expressing from the moment they step on our soil or are born into their American hospitals. This teacher's misguided decision is not only offensive to all of us Americans, it is detriminental to the students who "benefited" from the action. Wrong in every way!
ReplyDeleteRegardless of a holiday, we should always be proud to be American!! Offensive???? I think not. I don't understand why hispanics who chose to live in America would not be proud for anyone to show their pride in a country they live in!! I'm so sick of the Mexican-American, African-American, Irish-American, German-American, Native-American, gay, lesiban, black, white, Chinese-American divisions!! Let's dispense with the divisions and agree we are all AMERICAN!! You can be proud of who you are...that's good, heritage and traditions are important, so celebrate them...but don't expect everyone to ignore their heritage because of yours!!
ReplyDeleteI agree everyone should be proud of their heritage. I kind of feel sorry for the American boys. I doubt if they have any idea where they came from. I was so proud of the Spanish kids for giving their ancestors respect with the Cinco de Mayo day. I sure wish someone had done this for me. I have a long ancestry of names, back seven generations, but yet nothing more.
ReplyDeleteToday, I am trying to change that with a scrap book, and history of the people in my past...
I have no idea what language or culture my family enjoyed. Thank God for families who still respect their families. My back ground is English, German, Dutch.
