It's not often we can kill two birds with one stone, but today, the Cartoon of the Day IS the Outrageous Statement of the day. When are these hypers (is that even a word? If not, it should be) of overpopulation get a grip on the data. Instead of repeating the arguments here, just go to OverpopulationIsAMyth.com. They have all of the data and the arguments. A video they produced is below the cartoon as well.
Does the idea of human extinction send shivers down your back? Why does the idea bother us so much?
ReplyDeleteBecause we're wonderful. Without us the universe would be pointless, and God wouldn't have ever bothered with it. Does that sound narcissistic? Of course it does. If you're created in the image of an infinitely perfect being who loves you, you're going to have a little narcissism.
But will we go extinct? It's silly to think that humans would stop breeding, as the video implies. But, if I understand the current thinking in cosmology, the universe will someday become inhospitable to life. To a Christian, though, that shouldn't matter. Christ will put a stop to it. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead.
But we aren't going away. His kingdom will have no end. Every human being ever conceived will always exist, either in heaven or in hell. We can't get out of it. We're stuck with life, whether we like it or not.
Is it a sin for a Catholic to lament urban sprawl?
