A New York couple has been arrested for failing to report they were home schooling.
The Cressy family of Montgomery County, New York, home schools all four children, ages 8 to 14. However, parents Margie and Richard were arrested earlier this month by the county sheriff for allegedly failing to report to the local school district.
According to the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), which has agreed to represent the family in court, the arrests came a week after the school district notified the family that they were in compliance.
James Mason, senior council with HSLDA, explains. "There was an investigation and they were arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child -- and that's quite rare," he says. "I've never heard of that in my experience in New York or anywhere else where that's happened."
An initial appearance before a judge will take place in the near future with a trial date to be determined at that point. Mason tells OneNewsNow he is confident the charges will be dropped and that the Cressy family will be able to home school without interference.
Local news reports indicate the parents were issued appearance tickets, and that the children were not removed from the family home.
