Talking about the "things that matter most" on Nov. 20
4:00 – The Fulfillment of All Desire
EWTN Television recently aired a 13-week series on Ralph Martin‘s book The Fulfillment of all Desire. In it, Ralph draws upon the teaching of seven acknowledged “Spiritual Doctors” of the Church, presents an in-depth study of the journey to God. This book provides encouragement and direction for the pilgrim who desires to know, love, and serve our Lord. Whether the reader is beginning the spiritual journey or has been traveling the road for many years, he will find a treasure of wisdom. It is destined to be a modern classic on the spiritual life. Ralph is here in studio to discuss the Fulfillment of all Desire.
5:00 – The Pro-Life Movement: A Continuation of the Civil Rights Struggle
Dr. Alveda King currently serves as a Pastoral Associate and Director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries. She is also a voice for the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, sharing her testimony of two abortions, God’s forgiveness, and healing. The daughter of the late civil rights activist Rev. A.D. King and his wife Naomi Barber King, Alveda grew up in the civil rights movement led by her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Her family home in Birmingham, Alabama, was bombed, as was her father’s church office in Louisville, Kentucky. Alveda was jailed during the open housing movement. She sees the pro-life movement as a continuation of the civil rights struggle. Alveda is in town for a speaking engagement and joins us in studio to share her testimony, and look at the current state of the pro-life movement.
Every Sunday at 9 AM Eastern Time, KGO radio in San Francisco has a three hour religion show called God Talk. The host, Brent Walters, teaches at San Jose State University, specializing in Bible History and Literature in the Comparative Religious Studies Program. Brent strongly believes in his ability to objectively interpret scripture using proper context. Last week, he talked about Paul's letter to the Romans. Here's how he began the show: "Over the next three hours, we're going to discuss the most influential document in Western theology. And a strong case could be made that it's the most significant text ever produced in the West." Maybe that's true, I don't know. I do know that Brent does not lack in confidence.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do question his interpretive skill. The previous week he talked about "hard sayings" in the Bible. One of hard sayings was Jesus saying, in Matthew 26, "this is my body ... this is my blood". Brent 'proved' that Jesus was talking symbolically, referring back to the Old Testament. Unfortunately, I've forgotten the OT reference. Brent did not mention John 6.
And a few weeks ago Brent 'proved' that the early church did not believe that Jesus, as the Son of God, was divine. That notion, he said, came about a few centuries later. He made a somewhat plausible case for that, but he admitted during the show that many of his listeners were upset with him, judging from their emails.
KGO has a seven day archive, so you can listen to his show for one week, then they replace it with the latest show. (My link to the KGO archive has been set to Sunday. I click on Download to listen to an archived hour. Brent's show is on from 6AM to 9AM Sunday mornings San Francisco time.)
He always prepares something for each show, but he also takes calls. I'm tempted to call him and talk about the Eucharist, John 6, and Matthew 26. I think John 6 is pretty good context for Matthew 26.
Maybe some of you could call his show and provide the Catholic perspective (they don't have an 800 number). He's arrogant (admitting that people have told him so to his face) and sensitive about being challenged, so if anyone does decide to take him on, do it with humility and maybe even a bit of fawning.
If he is arrogant then he doesn't really want to know the answers. I've heard people like that discuss with the Catholic apologists on Catholic radio and they just won't listen. Even with clear explanations they deny what is right in front of them. I think we have to pray for him to be open to the truth first, then someone can confront him with any kind of success.
